When does your 8(a), WOSB, HUBZone or SDVOSB status expire?
A lapsed certification does not warn you. It stops you bidding the set-asides you built your pipeline around, and it turns a representation you made in good faith into something you have to explain. Here is where to find your own date.

Almost everything else in federal contracting tells you when it is going wrong. A solicitation closes and you see it close. An amendment lands and somebody notifies you. A certification simply stops being true on a date, and the first sign is usually an award you were counting on going to somebody else, or a contracting officer asking a question you cannot answer.
Why the date matters more than the paperwork
Three separate things break at once when a status lapses.
- Eligibility. Set-aside work reserved for that status is closed to you from the lapse onward. If your pipeline is mostly set-aside work, which for many small firms it is, most of the pipeline goes with it.
- Representations. You certify your status when you register and when you bid. Representing something you no longer hold is not a paperwork slip, and it is the part of this that keeps people awake once they understand it.
- Time. Recertification is not instant, and the gap between applying and being certified again is a gap in which you cannot bid that work. Starting the week it expires means months of exposure, not days.
Where your actual date lives
8(a), WOSB, EDWOSB and HUBZone
These are administered by the Small Business Administration through its certification system. Sign in and your status, your dates and anything outstanding are on your dashboard.
certification.sba.gov is the authoritative record, and sba.gov/certifications explains what each programme currently requires.
Veteran-owned: VOSB and SDVOSB
Veteran-owned certification is administered by SBA rather than the VA, which caught out a lot of firms when it moved. If you were certified under the old VA process, the thing to confirm is not just your date but which system currently holds your record.
Your SAM.gov registration is a different date
Worth stating plainly because it is the single most common confusion here: your entity registration on SAM.gov has its own expiry, separate from every certification above. A current registration with a lapsed certification is possible, and so is the reverse. An expired SAM.gov registration stops you being awarded anything at all, whatever you hold.
When to start
The honest answer is earlier than feels necessary, because the failure mode is asymmetric. Starting three months early costs you an afternoon of paperwork you would have done anyway. Starting three weeks early and hitting a request for additional information costs you a quarter of bidding.
If you hold more than one status, the dates will not align, and each one gates a different slice of your pipeline. Writing all of them in one place, once, is twenty minutes that most firms never spend.
How InstantSam handles this
You enter each certification once, with its expiry date, and you are warned at sixty, thirty, fourteen, seven and one day before it lapses. Sixty days is the one that matters: it is far enough out to start a renewal without rushing it.
Your SAM.gov registration expiry is tracked separately and on its own schedule, because it is a separate date that ends a separate set of things.
The reminders are a diary, not a compliance service. What you hold and when it expires is between you and SBA, and the systems linked above are the record.
Questions people ask
- Where do I check when my SBA certification expires?
- In the certification system that issued it. 8(a), WOSB, EDWOSB and HUBZone are administered through SBA's certification portal at certification.sba.gov. Veteran-owned certification moved to SBA and is administered through its own system. Your SAM.gov entity record shows what you have represented, which is not the same thing as what you currently hold.
- What happens if my certification lapses?
- You stop being eligible for awards reserved for that status. Depending on the programme and the timing, work already awarded may be unaffected, but anything you bid after the lapse is at risk. Worse, representing a status you no longer hold is a serious matter, so the exposure is not only commercial.
- How long does recertification take?
- Longer than people plan for, and it varies with the programme and with SBA's workload. The practical answer is to start months rather than weeks before the date, and to treat any published processing estimate as optimistic.
